The Land of Promises

Youqine Lefèvre is een Belgisch beeldend kunstenaar, woonachtig in Namen en geboren in de provincie Hunan (1993). The Land of Promises gaat over het geboortebeperkingsbeleid van China, in het bijzonder het eenkindbeleid (1979-2015) en richt zich op de vele gevolgen die nog steeds zichtbaar zijn en blijven voortduren. Tegelijkertijd is het een persoonlijk project waar verhalen verteld worden van de ouders die naar de andere kant van de wereld reisden om een ​​kind te adopteren, evenals de verhalen van de vijf andere meisjes die tegelijkertijd met Lefèvre werden geadopteerd. Maar vooral is het haar eigen ervaring die hier centraal staat.

Het project richt zich op de ontdekking van het land van herkomst van Lefèvre, als een poging om te begrijpen wat leidde tot de uittocht van honderdduizenden Chinese meisjes. Haar ‘herinnering’ aan de adoptie is gevormd door de verhalen die haar vader en de andere ouders haar hebben verteld, aangevuld met hun foto's en video’s en de officiële documenten. Haar project is gebaseerd op deze archieven (die teruggaan tot 1994), evenals de foto's die ze maakte tijdens haar reizen naar China (in 2017 en 2019), maar ook onderzoek op basis van publicaties van demografen en experts op het gebied van het geboortebeperkingsbeleid van China, en getuigenissen van mensen die ze in China ontmoette.

Tijdens haar onderzoek realiseerde Lefèvre zich dat er op het gebied van fotografie weinig projecten zijn over het Chinese geboortebeperkingsbeleid of over adoptie. Opvallend weinig kunstenaars die zelf geadopteerd zijn hebben zich hiermee bezig gehouden. Met haar project probeert ze een nuance aan te brengen in het heersende debat en de vooroordelen met betrekking tot het eenkindbeleid, de Chinese cultuur en wat het betekent om een ​​transraciaal en internationaal geadopteerde te zijn. The Land of Promises getuigt van een verlangen om haar herkomst te ontdekken en zich daar opnieuw mee te verbinden en zich haar verhaal eigen te maken.

Youqine Lefèvre studeerde beeldende kunst (bachelor) aan de École de Recherche Graphique te Brussel (B), volgde vervolgens de opleiding fotografie aan Centre d’Enseignements Professionel in Vevey (Zwitserland) en behaalde in 2020 haar master in beeldende kunsten / fotografie aan de Koninklijke Academie voor Schone Kunsten in Gent (B).

The Land of Promises

Youqine Lefèvre is a Belgian visual artist currently based in Namur and was born in Hunan Province (1993). The Land of Promises is about China’s birth control policy, especially its one-child policy (1979–2015), where it focuses on the many consequences that are still apparent and will continue. Simultaneously, it is a personal project as it also tells the stories of those parents who went to the other end of the world to adopt a child as well as the stories of the five other girls who were adopted at the same time as Lefèvre. Though it centralises her experience in particular.

The work focuses on the discovery of Lefèvre’s country of origin as an attempt to understand what led to the abandonment of hundreds of thousands of Chinese girls. Her ‘memory’ of this event has been mediated through the stories her father and the other parents have told her along with the photographs and videos they made in addition to the official documents. Her work draws on these archives (which date to 1994) including pictures she took during trips to China in (2017 and 2019), along with research based on writings of demographers and experts on China’s birth control policy, and testimonies of people she met in China.

During Lefèvre’s research, she realised that there are very few works about the Chinese birth control policy or about adoption in general in the field of photography. There are especially few works produced by artists who themselves were adopted. Through her work, she tries to bring a nuance to the dominant discourses and prejudices regarding the one-child policy, Chinese culture, and what it means to be a transracial and international adoptee. The Land of Promises testifies to a desire to discover and reconnect with her origins, to reclaim her story.

Youqine Lefèvre studied Visual Arts (bachelor) at the School of Graphic Research (ERG) in Brussels (B), continued to study photography at the School of Applied Arts (CEPV) in Vevey (Switzerland) and obtained her master's degree in Visual Arts / Photography in 2020 at The Royal Academy of Fine Arts (KASK) in Ghent (B).
