“In Topos, I explore my origins, my motivations, and a place called home.”

Topos

Literally, Topos means ‘place’ or ‘location’ (in Ancient Greek).

“On the edge of a restless drifting-sand landscape, once the seabed of an empty North Sea, my life begins in a country that has battled water for centuries. Since birth I have carried an endless longing for the sea. Hardly surprising, perhaps—born in a street named Delphinus, with a double water sign as my zodiac, and a name that means ‘beloved’ or ‘star of the sea.’

In the nearly 8 metre-long leporello ‘Kleine Schoolatlas der Gehele Aarde’ I chart my origins, determine my point of departure, unfold my path. The accompanying texts, titled Microkosmos, function as a legend, footnotes, or subtitles to this atlas.

The nature of our universe lies in the inbetween space, in how we relate to one another. Where are you? Where are we? Just imagine…”

Meij Gommers (Loon op Zand, 1978) studied at the Academie voor Beeldende Vorming in Tilburg, Dartington College of Arts, and the University of Brighton (UK).

The leporello is presented as a prelude to the Photobook Festival on Saturday, 23 May 2026. During the Photobook Festival, Meij Gommers will give an Artist Talk.
