FOTOKAFEINE met Thomas Kuijpers en Lana Mesić

Thomas Kuijpers en Lana Mesić leerden elkaar kennen tijdens rookpauzes. Misschien niet de beste gewoonte, maar wel een ideale katalysator voor hun eerste gesprekken. Sindsdien zijn ze altijd in elkaars orbit gebleven, zowel als vrienden als collega-kunstenaars. Beiden deden ze hun master in fotografie, en het hoogtepunt daarvan was ongetwijfeld hun epische reis naar New York, die hun vriendschap stevig heeft verankerd. 

Na hun master deelden ze een studio in de Schellensfabriek in Eindhoven. Die ruimte bood niet alleen eindeloze uren om ideeën uit te wisselen, maar leidde ook tot spontane avonturen. Zo besloten ze op een avond vol drankjes om hun vriend Rodrigo op te zoeken in Brazilië. Als niet-doorsnee toeristen, doken ze daar samen in een project – een echte work-hard, play-hard ervaring. Sindsdien zijn hun levens met elkaar verweven, en houden ze elkaar scherp in een wereld die soms eenzaam kan zijn. Het kunstenaarschap vergt veel, en het leven als maker kan soms als een eiland voelen. Juist daarom is het essentieel om mensen om je heen te hebben die je begrijpen en inspireren. 

Deze avond bij Fotokafeine staat dan ook in het teken van kunstenaarschap en vriendschap. Want zoals het gezegde luidt: "No man is an island." 

Thomas Kuijpers (1985) en Lana Mesić (1987) studeerden beiden Fotografie aan AKV| St. Joost in Breda (BA en MA). Beiden maakten bijzondere, maatschappelijk relevante projecten, waaronder Hoarder Order (2020) van Kuijpers en Anatomy of Forgiveness (2014) van Mesić.

Thomas Kuijpers and Lana Mesić met during smoke breaks. Maybe not the best habit, but an ideal catalyst for their first conversations. Since then, they have always remained in each other's orbit, both as friends and fellow artists. They both did their master's in photography, and the highlight of that was undoubtedly their epic trip to New York, which firmly anchored their friendship. 

After their masters, they shared a studio in the Schellensfabriek in Eindhoven. This space not only offered endless hours to exchange ideas, but also led to spontaneous adventures. For example, one night full of drinks, they decided to visit their friend Rodrigo in Brazil. As non-ordinary tourists, they dove into a project together – a real work-hard, play-hard experience. Since then, their lives have been intertwined, and they keep each other sharp in a world that can sometimes be lonely. Being an artist requires a lot, and life as a creator can sometimes feel like an island. That is precisely why it is essential to have people around you who understand and inspire you. 

This evening at Fotokeine is therefore dedicated to artistry and friendship. Because as the saying goes:

"No man is an island."
