Opening Hans Zoete – Een leven lang fotografie

Met de uitgave van een boek en een expositie bij Pennings Foundation wordt fotograaf Hans Zoete in de spotlights gezet door zijn vrienden en familie.

Hans Zoete (1948) is opgeleid als beeldend kunstenaar aan de kunstacademie van Den Bosch en houdt zich sindsdien bezig met fotografie. Eerst als documentair fotograaf, later als fotodocent, tentoonstellingsmaker, stafmedewerker bij het Nederlands Fotomuseum, als consulent fotografie en beeldende kunst bij het Centrum voor Amateurkunst en als directeur van Museum ’t Oude Slot en de Verdieping in Veldhoven.

Hans Zoete is in Eindhoven vooral bekend als fotodocent bij het CKE en als begeleider van fotoclubs. In 1994 neemt hij het initiatief tot het organiseren van een fotofestival: Foto Manifestatie Eindhoven. Tot 2000 organiseert hij samen met o.a. Harry Pennings vier edities. Hij blijft betrokken bij Galerie Pennings (de voorloper van Pennings Foundation) als reviewer tijdens portfolioreviews en door zijn deelname aan de lezingencommissie. Een deel van zijn verzameling fotoboeken heeft hij onlangs geschonken aan de bibliotheek van Pennings Foundation. Hans heeft zelf ook een fotoboek op zijn naam staan, ‘Harrieke’ (1987), over een meervoudig gehandicapt jongetje.

De expositie toont een overzicht van zijn fotografisch oeuvre, vanaf het jaar dat hij van de academie afkomt in 1983 tot 1995, het jaar dat hij definitief stopt als fotograaf en zich op andere wijze gaat inzetten voor fotografie en de beeldende kunst.

“Ik ga de schoonheid aan het licht brengen van iets wat anders niet gezien zou worden.”

Als documentair fotograaf gaat hij op zoek naar onderwerpen die nieuwswaarde hebben, zoals een hulpgoederentransport naar Polen, Lourdesgangers, vredeactivisten in Europa en vluchtelingenkampen in Mexico.

Toch legt hij niet de nieuwsfeiten vast, maar wat daar omheen gebeurt. In Polen fotografeert hij niet het bezoek van de paus, maar het publiek dat daar op afkomt.

Liever fotografeert hij kleine dingen die er ook toe doen. “Het cement tussen de stenen”, noemt hij dat. “De schoonheid van het gewone, het bescheidene” wordt zijn leidmotief .

“In de fotografie heb je jagers en vissers. Ik ben een visser.”

Het boek ‘Gezien. Hans Zoete. Foto’s 1983-1995’ (2022) bevat teksten van Frits Achten en Bouke Zoete en staat vol met markante uitspraken van Hans.

Het boek is te koop bij Pennings Foundation (35 euro).

Ook de prints zijn te koop. De opbrengst gaat naar een goed doel.

Tijdens deze expositie is Pennings Foundation ook op zondag geopend.

With the publication of a book and an exhibition at Pennings Foundation, photographer Hans Zoete is put in the spotlight by his friends and family.

Hans Zoete (1948) was trained as a visual artist at the art academy in Den Bosch and has been involved in photography ever since. First as a documentary photographer, later as a photo teacher, exhibition maker, staff member at the Nederlands Fotomuseum, as a photography and visual arts consultant at the Centrum voor Amateurkunst and as director of Museum 't Oude Slot and De Verdieping in Veldhoven.

Hans Zoete is best known in Eindhoven as a photo teacher at the CKE and as a supervisor of photo clubs. In 1994 he takes the initiative to organize a photo festival: Foto Manifestatie Eindhoven. Until 2000 he organizes four editions together with Harry Pennings, among others. He remains involved with Galerie Pennings (the predecessor of the Pennings Foundation) as a reviewer during portfolio reviews and through his participation in the lecture committee. He recently donated part of his collection of photo books to the Pennings Foundation library. Hans also has a photo book to his name, 'Harrieke' (1987), about a boy with multiple disabilities.

The exhibition shows an overview of his photographic oeuvre, from the year he left the academy in 1983 until 1995, the year in which he definitively stopped as a photographer and started to devote himself to photography and the visual arts in different ways.

“I am going to bring to light the beauty of something that would otherwise not be seen.”

As a documentary photographer, he looks for topics that are newsworthy, such as an aid transport to Poland, people travelling to Lourdes, peace activists in Europe and refugee camps in Mexico.

Yet he does not record the news facts, he records what happens around them. In Poland, he does not photograph the Pope's visit, but the public that came to see him.

He prefers to photograph small things that matter. “The cement between the stones”, he calls it. “The beauty of the ordinary, the modest” becomes his leitmotif.

“In photography there are hunters and fishermen. I am a fisherman.”

The book ‘Gezien. Hans Zoete. Foto’s 1983-1995’ (2022) contains texts by Frits Achten and Bouke Zoete and is full of striking statements by Hans.

The book is for sale at Pennings Foundation (35 euro).
