Boekpresentatie - Miek van Dongen

Op vrijdagavond 22 oktober presenteert Miek van Dongen bij Pennings Foundation haar boek ‘Toon mij wie je bent’, dat verschijnt bij Lecturis. Met de dementie van haar moeder als aanleiding, verdiepte beeldend kunstenaar-fotograaf Miek van Dongen zich in de wereld die schuilgaat achter een dementieproces. Om de veranderingen in het dementieproces nauwgezet te volgen, maakte ze gedurende het laatste levensjaar van haar moeder bij elk bezoek een opname via de pinhole-techniek. In totaal zo’n 45 stuks. Een pinhole is een doos met een klein gaatje met lichtgevoelig papier. Door de lange belichtingstijd die bij deze techniek hoort zijn de foto’s in het begin van het proces bewogen. Maar naar gelang de moeder minder beweegt, worden de beelden scherper. Iedere opname opnieuw is onvoorspelbaar en daardoor verrassend. Zo worden de subtiele verschuivingen van het proces langzaam zichtbaar. Hoe meer de dementerende persoon stilvalt en vervaagt, hoe scherper het beeld wordt en hoe duidelijker het besef dat het einde nadert.

Het is een intieme documentaire serie geworden, aangevuld met een essay en tekstfragmenten.

Tijdens de boekpresentatie gaat kunst- en cultuureducator Annelijn Smulders met Miek van Dongen in gesprek en geeft de kunstenaar een inkijkje in haar werkwijze en de verbinding die ontstaat tussen het dementieproces van haar moeder en de pinholes.

Miek van Dongen studeerde autonome kunst aan AKV |St. Joost ’s-Hertogenbosch.

Book launch - Miek van Dongen

On Friday evening October 22, Miek van Dongen will present her book Toon me wie jij bent’ (Show me who you are) at Pennings Foundation, which will be published by Lecturis. Based on her mother's dementia, visual artist-photographer Miek van Dongen immersed herself in the world that is hidden behind a dementia process. In order to closely monitor the changes in the dementia process, she made a recording using the pinhole technique at every visit during her mother's last year of life. In total about 45 pieces. A pinhole is a box with a small hole containing light-sensitive paper. Due to the long exposure time associated with this technique, the photos are out of focus at the beginning of the process. But as the mother moves less, the images become sharper. Every shot is unpredictable and therefore surprising. In this way, the subtle shifts of the process slowly become visible. The more the person with dementia moves less and fades, the sharper the image becomes and the clearer the realization that the end is approaching.

It has become an intimate documentary series, supplemented with an essay and text fragments.

At the book presentation, art and culture educator Annelijn Smulders will have a conversation with Miek van Dongen and the artist will give an insight into her working method and the connection that arises between her mother's dementia process and the pinholes.
