A search for the genuine essence of analogue photography

Karsten Kronas' work consists mainly of long-term projects. Currently, he is researching analog photography. Initially, he focused his research on negatives and polaroids, looking mainly at errors in exposure and development. Later he focused his research on remnants of photographic material from photo laboratories for developing and printing color photography and waste material from 35 mm black and white film rolls.

He is not so much concerned with the images in the photographs, but more with the whole process of analog photography and the characteristics of the materials. His practice is a reflection on this. This results in abstracted images.

"Sometimes for me it feels like an intimate quest on what a photography self-portrait may look like. I strip the image of its spatial illusion and translate it into a new reality: that of the material itself.”

Karsten Kronas (1978 Wiesbaden, DE) studied Photography and Media at University of Applied Sciences, Bielefeld and is now following the master's degree there. He teaches Documentary & Conceptual Photography at the Trade School for Design & Media in  Bielefeld. Kronas has a number of (artist) books to his name, including ‘Primal Scream’(2011), ‘Welcome to the Jungle’ (2017), ‘Nineteen Swimming Pools and Broken Glass’ (2020) and ‘Searching for Mr. X’ (coming soon).
