Speelgoedgeweren zijn er in felgekleurde waterpistolen en vreemd gevormde laserwapens, maar zijn voor een deel ook verkrijgbaar in griezelig realistische imitaties die gemakkelijk kunnen worden aangezien voor echte wapens. In het boek ‘Peacekeepers’ (2021) stelt Daan Wubben de ethiek van dit speelgoed ter discussie en vraagt hij de lezer om zijn/haar standpunt te bepalen.

Hier trek ik de grens.

Peacekeepers is een selectie van honderd door de EU goedgekeurde speelgoedwapens. De fotoserie maakt deel uit van het onderzoek van Daan Wubben naar het ontwerp en de regelgeving van speelgoedwapens in de Europese Unie. Alle voorwerpen zijn online besteld, in de studio gefotografeerd en teruggestuurd naar de afzender.

Bij Pennings Foundation is een selectie uit de serie foto’s te zien. Tijdens de presentatie is het boek te koop (€ 35,00).

Designer-fotograaf Daan Wubben volgde zijn opleiding aan de Design Academy te Eindhoven. Hij haalt zijn inspiratie uit opvallend gewone thema's, waar niemand anders bijzondere aandacht aan schenkt, maar waar we wel allemaal iets van vinden. Hij legt de onderliggende implicaties van dergelijke thema's bloot door de aandacht te richten op iets 'extra's' binnen het 'gewone'. Zijn werk is zowel associatief als poëtisch. Met behulp van de spiegel van zijn camera reflecteert hij op verschillende kanten van een verhaal, zodat we het grotere geheel kunnen zien.

The world of toy guns is a place of brightly colored water pistols and oddly shaped laser weapons, but also eerily realistic imitations that can easily be mistaken for the real deal. In the book ‘Peacekeepers’ (2021), Daan Wubben questions the ethics of these toys, and asks the reader to determine their stands.

This is where I draw the line.

Peacekeepers is a selection of one hundred EU-approved toy guns. The photo series is part of Daan Wubben’s research into toy gun design and regulations in the European Union. All pieces were ordered online, shot in the studio and returned to sender.

Designer-fotograaf Daan Wubben studied at Design Academy, Eindhoven.

He draws inspiration from oddly ordinary themes, that no-one else seems to even blink an eye at. He uncovers the underlying implications of such themes from the cobwebs of our assumptions by directing our attention towards something ‘extra’ within the ‘ordinary’. His work is both relatable and poetic. Using the mirror of his camera, he reflects on different sides of a narrative, so that we can see the bigger picture.
