Eindhoven has been known as a city that has many expats for many decades now, though we often don’t know the stories behind the people who live here. Moving abroad can be the start of a new beginning, except it isn’t always the only start. Sometimes a wedding is the beginning of an exciting phase of the next step in life. The exhibition ‘I Do’ focuses on the stories of international spouses from the Get In Touch community, offering a behind-the-scenes impression of their weddings, the challenges they faced when settling here, along with the opportunities it brings.

Get In Touch stands for reconnecting with yourself, your new life and the environment. Courage, resilience, and love that transcends borders sets the tone for the future.

Through personal stories, exclusive footage and accessories, this exhibition illustrates a layered structure where weddings and new beginnings unite to emphasise commitment.

Weddings

This exhibition portrays that weddings are unique to every couple. These are stories that represent civil as well as traditional weddings. Weddings in which different traditions can merge such as a Buddhist and Hindu rituals. Weddings in which traditions change when choosing a European wedding over a traditional Ukrainian one. Weddings that had to be postponed, or even the choice of not marrying at all.

International spouses from countries such as India, Nepal, Indonesia and Chile, all show the richness and diversity of cultures that these weddings have to offer. Other stories show how Covid-19 unfortunately threw a spanner in the works. From traditional wedding dresses and invitations to activities such as painting henna designs, one can get a glimpse of these special customs when experiencing this multicultural atmosphere.

New Beginnings

Even though the future of an expat can be uncertain in whether to stay or leave, the exhibition shows the resilience of the expat-spouses. Though it was a job position of their partner that brought them here, this exhibition focuses on the journey of the international spouses and their experiences in finding their own way in a new country and to make it their second home.

Integrating in a new country is more than homesickness, learning the language, or struggling with Dutch at the supermarket. There is also the effort with preserving and adapting traditions or finding a new purpose. There are also exciting moments, whether it is cycling in the city for the first time, meeting new people or creating new traditions.

Moving abroad requires flexibility and adapting, but it also emphasises the commitment between partners that often started with a wedding and transformed into new opportunities.

During the exhibition, various activities are organized by the international spouses.

Decennia lang staat Eindhoven al bekend als een stad met veel expats. Toch kennen we de verhalen achter de mensen die hier wonen vaak niet. Verhuizen naar het buitenland kan het begin zijn van een nieuwe start. Het is niet altijd de enige start, soms is een bruiloft de markering van een indrukwekkende fase in de volgende stap in je leven. De tentoonstelling ‘I Do’ focust zich op de verhalen van internationale echtgenoten van de Get In Touch community, die een indruk achter de schermen geven van hun bruiloften, de uitdagingen die zich voordeden bij het vestigen hier en de kansen die het met zich meebrengt.

Get In Touch staat voor het in contact komen met jezelf, je nieuwe leven en je omgeving. De moed, de veerkracht en de letterlijk grenzeloze liefde vormen de basis voor de toekomst. Persoonlijke verhalen, verrijkt met exclusief beeldmateriaal en accessoires, tonen in deze expositie een gelaagdheid waar bruiloften en een nieuw begin samenkomen om verbintenis te benadrukken.

Bruiloften

De tentoonstelling laat zien dat bruiloften uniek zijn voor elk bruidspaar. Dit zijn verhalen over zowel trouwen voor de wet als traditionele bruiloften. Bruiloften waar verschillende tradities kunnen samenvloeien, zoals boeddhistische en hindoeïstische rituelen. Bruiloften waar tradities veranderen door het kiezen van een Westerse bruiloft in plaats van een traditionele Oekraïense bruiloft. Bruiloften die moesten worden uitgesteld, of zelfs de keuze om helemaal niet te trouwen.

Internationale echtgenoten afkomstig uit landen zoals India, Nepal, Indonesië en Chili laten met hun bruiloften de rijkdom en diversiteit aan culturen zien. Andere verhalen laten zien hoe Covid-19 helaas roet in het eten gooide. Met traditionele trouwjurken en uitnodigingen en activiteiten zoals het schilderen van henna designs geeft de tentoonstelling een inkijkje in deze bijzondere gebruiken, waardoor je de multiculturele sfeer ervaart.

Nieuw begin

Hoewel de toekomst van een expat onzeker kan zijn, hetzij door te blijven, hetzij door te vertrekken, toont deze tentoonstelling de veerkracht van de internationale echtgenoten. Hoewel het veelal de baan van hun partner was die hen hier bracht, richt deze tentoonstelling zich op de ontwikkeling van de internationale echtgenoten en de ervaringen om hun eigen weg te vinden in een nieuw land en er een tweede thuis van te maken.

Inburgeren in een nieuw land gaat over meer dan heimwee, de taal leren of worstelen met Nederlands in de supermarkt. Het gaat ook om het behouden en aanpassen van tradities of het vinden van een nieuw doel. Er zijn enerverende momenten zoals voor het eerst fietsen door de stad, nieuwe mensen ontmoeten of nieuwe tradities creëren. Verhuizen naar het buitenland vereist flexibiliteit en aanpassingsvermogen, maar het benadrukt ook de verbintenis tussen partners, wat vaak begon met een bruiloft en transformeerde naar nieuwe kansen.

Tijdens de expositie worden door de internationale spouses diverse activiteiten georganiseerd.
