De presentatie bij Pennings Foundation bestaat uit een video-installatie die in haar opzet poëtisch schuift tussen de menselijke omgeving van de straat en de meer abstracte wereld van de technologie, zoals algoritmes en robotisering. 

Met behulp van personages en sculpturale rekwisieten, zoals maskers van spiegelglas, stelt J&B de vraag of technologie ontmenselijkt. J&B verbeeldt de werkende mens en plaatst het in een ander licht. Zet de mens zichzelf op een zijspoor?

Uitgangspuntpunt voor de video-installatie vormt een werk van Gilbert & George: Are you angry or are you boring?Het werk uit 1977 bevindt zich in de collectie van het Van Abbemuseum. Are you angry or are you boring?toont drukke straatbeelden die associaties oproepen met onlusten, rellen en activisme. Deze hectische beelden vormen een tegenstelling met de beelden van Gilbert en George, keurige mannen in kostuum. In de context van de hedendaagse maatschappij kun je een vergelijkbaar contrast zien tussen ‘saaie’ techneuten en de onrust die hun technologieën en automatisering teweegbrengen. Future phobia, of is de onrust terecht?

 

Dit nieuwste J&B videowerk Work in Progress brengt een dag en een nacht in Eindhoven in beeld. Een personage met spiegelmasker is met zijn Boombox met rapmuziek te zien in verschillende werksituaties in Eindhoven: in een gerobotiseerde productielijn, afwassen in een restaurant, ontwerpen op een computer, straatvegen en meer. Het personage en de rappende Boombox hebben het over werk en de invloed hiervan op ons leven, angry of juist boring?

 

De rap is speciaal voor dit werk gemaakt door de Eindhovense rapper Miggs de Bruijn.

 

De installatie bestaat uit een combinatie van het videowerk en witte sculpturen met stijlvolle zwarte composities en gravures erop en erin gekerfd. De sculpturen doen denken aan straatmeubilair, zoals kliko’s, abri’s en heipalen. Ze zijn gemaakt van het wegwerp-materiaal piepschuim. De composities op de sculpturen zijn gebaseerd op meningen en creatieve uitingen van de straat. Daarmee transformeren de sculpturen in totempalen vol symboliek. Over de sculpturen heen wordt de video-installatie getoond. De beschouwer is tevens voorbijganger.

 

Het Rotterdamse kunstenaarsduo J&B laat zich inspireren door de straat en gebruikt gevonden materialen en meningen van de straat. J&B gelooft in ‘street-wise’: de creativiteit, het geheugen en de wijsheid van de straat. J&B maakte in 2018 voor Nieuw Dakota in Amsterdam de installatie: Noord, Staat van de Straat. Als uitgangspunt voor het project documenteerden J&B in Amsterdam Noord alle uitingen op straat zoals stickers, posters en graffiti. Zo werd het sociale weefsel van Noord in kaart gebracht, een archeologie van de straat. In het werk van J&B komen deze straat-uitingen, vermengd met maatschappelijke issues, tot leven. J&B laat de samenleving commentaar op zichzelf geven. Het duo is hierin schatplichtig aan Gilbert & George die voor de serie The Dirty Word Picturesteksten gebruikten die ze op straat vonden.

 

Jacob (Den Haag, 1967) volgde de opleiding Natuurkunde aan TU Delft. Bert Frings (Heerlen, 1972) volgde zijn opleiding aan de Gerrit Rietveld Academie en De Ateliers in Amsterdam. Sinds 2015 vormen ze het kunstenaarsduo J&B.

The presentation at Pennings Foundation consists of a video installation that poetically shifts between the human environment of the street and the more abstract world of technology, such as algorithms and robotization. With the help of characters and sculptural props, such as mirror glass masks, J&B asks whether technology is dehumanized. J&B represents the working person and places it in a different light. Does man put himself on the sidelines?

The starting point for the video installation is a work by Gilbert & George: Are you angry or are you boring? The work from 1977 is in the collection of the Van Abbemuseum. Are you angry or are you boring? shows busy street scenes that evoke associations with riots and activism. These hectic images contrast with the images of Gilbert and George, neat men in suits. In the context of contemporary society you can see a similar contrast between "boring" technicians and the unrest that their technologies and automation cause. Future phobia, or is the unrest justified?

This newest J&B video Work in Progress shows a day and a night in Eindhoven. A character with a mirror mask can be seen with his Boombox with rap music in various work situations in Eindhoven: in a robotized production line, doing the dishes in a restaurant, designing on a computer, street sweeping and more. The character and the rapping Boombox talk about work and the influence of this on our lives. Angry or boring?

The rap was specially made for this work by the Eindhoven rapper Miggs de Bruijn.

The installation consists of a combination of video work and white sculptures with stylish black compositions and engravings on it and carved in it. The sculptures are reminiscent of street furniture, such as waste containers, shelters and piles. They are made from the disposable polystyrene material. The compositions on the sculptures are based on opinions and creative expressions of the street. The sculptures thus transform into totem poles full of symbolism. The video installation is shown over the sculptures. The viewer is also a passer-by.

The Rotterdam artist duo J&B is inspired by the street and uses found materials and opinions from the street. J&B believes in "street-wise": the creativity, memory and wisdom of the street. In 2018 J&B made the installation for New Dakota in Amsterdam: Noord, Staat van de Straat. As a starting point for the project, J&B documented all expressions on the street in Amsterdam Noord, such as stickers, posters and graffiti. In this way the social fabric of Noord was mapped, an archeology of the street. In the work of J&B, these street expressions, mixed with social issues, come to life. J&B allows society to comment on itself. The duo is indebted to Gilbert & George who for the series The Dirty Word Pictures used texts that they found on the street.
