“Vroeg in mijn leven verlies ik mijn moeder. Mensen aan wie ik gehecht ben verdwijnen zonder afscheid te nemen. Het tekent mijn leven. Het proces van verlies wordt de rode draad in mijn werk. Verlies van geliefden, van illusies en dromen, van onschuld en onbevangenheid. Hoe gaan wij om met levens-veranderende, ingrijpende gebeurtenissen? Fotografie is de vorm voor mij om het voortdurend proces van verlies aan te kunnen gaan en er betekenis aan te geven.”

Door haar persoonlijke ervaring voelt Claire Felicie zich sterk verbonden met mensen die eveneens geliefden hebben verloren. Voor mensen die de dood in de ogen hebben gekeken deinst ze niet terug. Ze zocht militairen op voor, tijdens en na hun missie in Afghanistan. Dat resulteerde in de indrukwekkende serie ‘Here Are The Young Men’ (2009-2010). Daarna zocht ze getraumatiseerde militairen op en daar kwam de serie ‘Only The Sky Remains Untouched’ (2015-2016) uit voort. Met beide series oogstte ze veel lof.

In 2017 en opnieuw in 2018 reisde ze naar Koerdistan om er Peshmerga vrouwen te ontmoeten die strijden voor hun land. Het resultaat is de serie ‘Daughters of the Sun’.

​

Recent werkt ze aan de serie ‘Beauty from the Ashes’, bestaande uit donkere, onscherpe portretten van vrienden. “Ik wil ermee uitdrukken dat de dood, gesymboliseerd door het donkere – de ‘as’- bij het leven hoort. Door je bewust te zijn van je eigen sterfelijkheid leef je intenser en bewuster.”

Als contrast laat ze ook vroeg werk zien uit de serie ‘In the Forecourt’. In deze serie drukt ze een sfeer uit van dromen, illusies, onschuld en onbevangenheid. Het zijn foto’s van kinderen, háár kinderen, die genieten van een onbezorgde jeugd. Een jeugd die zij zelf heeft moeten missen.

“Fotografie is voor mij veel meer dan registratie van het moment, het raakt voor mij aan het leven zelf. Fotografie bevriest het moment, waardoor het proces van verlies (voor even) tot stilstand wordt gebracht. Meer nog dan film is fotografie daarom het medium om aan de oneindigheid te raken.”

Claire Felicie (Breda, 1966) is autodidact. Ze heeft een aantal fotoboeken op haar naam staan, o.a. Here Are The Young Men (2013) en Only The Sky Remains Untouched (2016). Ze woont in Amsterdam.

Distant Sky is the first retrospective exhibition of Claire Felicie. Her oeuvre has always been characterized by loss.

"At an early age I lose my mother. People I am attached to disappear without saying goodbye. It determines my life. The process of loss is the common thread in my work. Loss of loved ones, of illusions and dreams, of innocence and open-mindedness. How do we deal with life-changing, radical events? For me photography is the way to follow the ongoing process of loss and give it meaning."

Due to her experiences in life, Claire Felicie feels strongly connected to people who also have lost loved ones. She does not shrink from people who are confronted with death. She looked for marines before, during and after their mission in Afghanistan. That resulted in the impressive series 'Here Are The Young Men' (2009-2010). Then she looked for traumatized soldiers and that is where the series 'Only The Sky Remains Untouched' (2015-2016) comes from. She was highly appreciated for both series. In 2017 and again in 2018 she traveled to Kurdistan to meet Peshmerga women who are fighting for their country. The result is the series 'Daughters of the Sun'.

Nowadays, she works on the series 'Beauty from the Ashes', consisting of dark, blurry portraits of friends. "I want to express that death, symbolized by the dark – the "ashes"- belongs to life. By being aware of your own mortality, you will live more intensely and consciously."

​

As a contrast, she also shows early work from the series 'In the Forecourt'. By this series she expressed an atmosphere of dreams, illusions, innocence and open-mindedness. She shows pictures of children, her children, who enjoy childhood without worries. A youth that she herself had to miss.

"For me, photography is much more than registration of the moment. For me, it touches life itself. Photography freezes the moment, bringing the process of loss to a halt (for a moment). More than film, photography is therefore the medium that touches infinity."
