Vrijdag 21 juni 2019 vertelt beeldend kunstenaar Helen Sear over haar tentoonstelling ‘A Hiding Place in Waking Dreams’, die t/m 22 juni is te zien bij Pennings Foundation.
Het is haar eerste solo-expositie in Nederland. Vanuit een achtergrond in performance, film en installatie in de jaren tachtig experimenteert ze met digitale technieken en lens-based media, gecombineerd met tekeningen en geluid.
Technologie, landschap, mensen en dieren spelen een belangrijke rol in het werk van Helen Sear. Ze vestigt de aandacht op de veranderende relatie van de mens ten opzichte van zijn omgeving. Invloeden van (magisch-realistische) literatuur, film, schilderkunst en oude fotografische technieken zijn merkbaar in haar werk.
Ze toont o.a. werk uit de series Becoming Forest, Diviner, Sightlines, Viewfinder, Pastoral Monuments, de video Wahaha Biota en Cold Frame.
Helen Sear (1955) studeerde Beeldende Kunst aan de Reading University en University College London (Slade School). Haar fotografische werken werden algemeen bekend in de tentoonstelling ‘De-Composition: Constructed Photography in Britain’ (1991), die door Latijns-Amerika en Oost-Europa toerde. Ze had een solotentoonstelling op de 56e Biënnale van Venetië in 2015. Tot voor kort was ze gastdocent aan de Royal Academy Schools in Londen. Ze woont tegenwoordig in Frankrijk.

A Hiding Place in Waking Dreams Helen Sear’s first solo exhibition in the Netherlands.
From a fine art background in performance, film and installation work in the 1980s she continues to explore digital technologies and lens-based media, combining drawings and sound.
Technology, landscape and the human and animal body have played an important part in her work. She focuses on our changing relationship with our environment. She has also been very influenced by literature (magic realism), cinema, painting and early photographic techniques.
Series on show at the exhibition, amongst others: Becoming Forest, Diviner, Sightlines, Viewfinder, Pastoral Monuments, the video Wahaha Biota and Cold Frame.
Helen Sear (1955) studied Fine Art at Reading University and University College London, Slade School. Her photographic works became widely known in the 1991 exhibition ‘De-Composition: Constructed Photography’ in Britain, which toured Latin America and Eastern Europe. She had a solo exhibition at the 56th Venice Biennale in 2015. Until recently she was visiting professor at the Royal Academy Schools in London. Nowadays she lives in France.
