Photography gives a realistic picture of reality, right? Visual artist Michiel Kluiters plays with our capacity for spatial insight. With photography and installations he makes us wonder. On the occasion of the publication of his book 'Doorways', a small presentation is now on show at Pennings Foundation, photos of self-built structures with dramatic lighting. The presentation is also a pre-announcement of the group exhibition ‘Space’ that will be on display at the Pennings Foundation in September and October of this year. Michiel Kluiters will be one of the exhibitors.

Kluiters has been involved in building spaces on a scale since his academy days. He was fascinated by how he could visually affect an existing space by making blow-ups of his constructions. First with wall-filling photo works, later also with video installations, architectural interventions and sculptures in public space.

In his recent work, the architectural scale models have been turned into roughly built spatial objects with passages. He adds drama through cinematic lighting, as if something has happened or is about to happen. Are we looking at the remnants of a utopian past or at places that represent a possible dystopian future?

Michiel Kluiters (1971) studied autonomous design at HKU in Utrecht and sculpture at the Gerrit Rietveld Academie and the  Ateliers in Amsterdam.
