CONGO
Carl de Keyzer, December 11, 2021 - April 16, 2022
Between 2003 and 2009, the Belgian photographer visited Congo several times in search of remnants of Belgian colonization.
Contemplative Assignment
Together we view the exhibition on the basis of Visual Thinking Strategies. (VTS is a method of art appreciation that is based on “Looking – thinking – discussing” on the basis of three questions.) We thus discuss the displayed works with their themes and the personal interpretation of the students.
Practical Assignment
Look for traces of the past captured through photography. For example, an old photo of your family, your house or another subject that appeals to you personally. Respond to the old photo by adding a new photo showing which traces of the past are still visible. Describe your choice and motivation.
Example: I have chosen a photo of my Grandma Helena. I never knew her but my mother (Helena's daughter) always tells me that I look so much like her. I have copied the portrait freely, so not quite exactly, so that you can see the difference in time despite the old atmosphere. My grandmother's photo was taken in the late 1930s. So the photo of myself almost a hundred years later! I myself am a trace of the past, by resemblance.
